Advanced Design Project 2026
2026/02/23
In this year’s project design course, 87 students worked from February 23 to March 6 2026, on the design of a chemical plant at industrial scale. The course was carried out in close collaboration with an industrial partner, with organizational leadership provided by Provadis and the Franken working group. An excursion to the industrial plant on March 11 complemented the practice-oriented assignment.
The project design course has a strong international character. Participants include Master’s students in Technical Chemistry, students from Provadis University of Applied Sciences (Chemical Engineering program), the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology (Rapid City, SD, USA), and the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Terre Haute, IN, USA).
A total of 87 students worked in eleven groups over a two-week period intensively with the assigned task. The focus lied on the design and evaluation of a production plant, as well as the independent development of key chemical engineering concepts.
The students addressed topics such as mass balances, reaction kinetics, separation processes, heat integration, cost estimation, and process safety assessment.
On the final day, the groups presented their results in concluding presentations. The course traditionally ended with a joint pizza event in a relaxed and social atmosphere.
