Excursion to Celanese

We visited Celanese as part of the “Technical Chemistry 1” Lecture.

As part of the “Technical Chemistry 1” lecture, we went on an excursion to Celanese in the Höchst Industrial Park. We visited the so-called VINA plant, in which vinyl acetate is produced from ethene and acetic acid by direct oxidation with molecular oxygen on a heterogeneous catalyst. VINA production in Frankfurt-Höchst takes place in a world-scale plant: The production capacity is up to 340,000 tons per year, an enormous and remarkable dimension. We were given a wonderful insight into many typical unit operations of a large-scale chemical process, such as multitube fixed bed reactors, separation technologies by arrangements of distillation columns (up to approx. 60 m high), heat exchangers, compressors, flares (70 m high), process control systems and various safety devices. In addition to the tour of the plant, Celanese presented its wide range of products. A team from the plant management, mostly alumni of TU Darmstadt, was also on site and reported on their exciting career paths in the company. The students were also accompanied by a number of doctoral students. Together with the excellent support from Celanese, this resulted in a wonderful, interesting day with intensive technical discussions and a valuable exchange of experiences.
