New VUV Laser System

2022/11/21

A new laser system for the VUV spectroscopy has been installed. With this light source it is possible to determine the ionization potentials of clusters more precisely. In addition, the intensity of the light is much more intense than with the previously used monochromator setup, allowing more cluster species to be measured.

The system consists of two dye lasers pumped by a Nd:YAG laser. One of the dye lasers is frequency doubled, allowing either frequency sum mixing with the second dye laser in a BBO crystal (190-250nm) or four-wave mixing in a xenon cell (150-190nm).

It was even possible to perform first promising experiments with the frequency sum mixing in the BBO crystal. The next step is the construction and testing of the xenon cell.
