Charlotte Gallenkamp Wins Agnes Pockels Doctoral Award

At the Bunsen Meeting 2023, the German Bunsen Society for Physical Chemistry awarded the Agnes Pockels PhD Prize to Charlotte Gallenkamp for her outstanding doctoral thesis

2023/07/05

The freshly graduated PhD and CRC 1487 member Dr. Charlotte Gallenkamp had another reason to celebrate after her successful PhD defense last October! At the Bunsen meeting “Physical Chemistry of the Energy Transition” that took place in Berlin, June 05th to 07th 2023, she was awarded the Agnes Pockels PhD Prize. With her presentation in a special lecture session for the nominees, Charlotte Gallenkamp convinced the jury and was awarded “in recognition of her outstanding contributions to theoretical spectroscopy of FeNC catalysis”. In her dissertation, Charlotte Gallenkamp made important contributions to the identification of catalytically active sites in FeNC catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction by skillfully combining density functional theory calculations, theoretical spectroscopy, and thermodynamic considerations with experimental information. FeNC catalysts are promising candidates for future applications in fuel cells because they are less expensive than the critical element platinum and could thus potentially replace it.

We congratulate Dr. Charlotte Gallenkamp on this success and wish her all the best for the future.

The Agnes Pockels Doctoral Prize is awarded annually at the Bunsen Conference. „Das Besondere am Promotionspreis ist, dass die ausgewählten Kandidaten in einem Doktorandensymposium ihre Vorträge halten, von denen ein Beitrag den Preis gewinnt.“ (Translation: The special feature of the doctoral award is that the selected candidates give their presentations in a doctoral symposium, of which one contribution wins the prize). The jury consists of Prof. Dr. Ralf Ludwig (Rostock), Prof. Dr. Manfred Kappes (Karlsruhe), Dr. Carolin Müller (Luxemburg), Dr. Mathias Micheel (Jena) and members of the Young Physical Chemists.
