Frederik Lermyte: New professor in the LOEWE focus TRABITA

2020/08/26

As of July 1, 2020, the Chemistry Department at TU Darmstadt welcomes Frederik Lermyte as a new Professor. Mr. Lermyte works in the field of “conformation-sensitive mass spectrometry” within the LOEWE focus TRABITA.

Mr. Lermyte studied at the University of Antwerp (Belgium), where he received his PhD in chemistry in 2016. He then worked at the University of Warwick (Great Britain) and the University of Liège (Belgium). He has received awards and funding from the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO), the Belgian Society for Mass Spectrometry (BSMS), the European Biophysical Societies’ Association (EBSA), the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) and the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique – FNRS (F.R.S.-FNRS).

Mr. Lermyte will work at the TU Darmstadt in the field of conformation-sensitive mass spectrometry, and will play a central role in the recently founded LOEWE consortium TRABITA. A particular focus will be on the structural characterization of medically relevant proteins for the identification of drug binding sites. His research interests include fundamental and applied aspects of native mass spectrometry, top-down protein analysis, hydrogen-deuterium exchange, and ion mobility spectrometry.

For the students of the TU Darmstadt, Mr. Lermyte will develop lectures on advanced mass spectrometry, especially how it is used in modern biosciences. In addition, he will design a series of practical mass spectrometry experiments for interested Master’s students.
