Tailoring Magnetic Properties of Iron by Non-Equilibrium Interstitial Engineering in Thin Films

About

This project aims to modify soft magnetic iron in form of a thin film by adding environmentally friendly elements in such a way that application-relevant hard magnetic materials are created. On the one hand, we want to further enrich Fe8Nx with interstitial N and tetragonalize it in order to achieve a predicted very large magneto-crystalline anisotropy. On the other hand, the hard magnetic ordered compound L10 FeNi is to be synthesized using nitrogen technology. Non-equilibrium methods such as thin film technology have to be used for both materials to overcome equilibrium thermodynamics.
