Our Research

Our research deals with safety-related investigations of reaction mixtures, testing of new reagents and process variants on mini-plant scale at up to 3000 bar, and the simulation of processes up to world scale.

Polymer Synthesis

Homo-, co-, and ter-polymers of ethene can be produced via continuous high-pressure polymerization at pressures up to 3000 bar. Besides, the solution polymerization mini-plant provides access to HDPE and LLDPE, which can be obtained by catalytic polymerization.

Safety Technology

Ethylene has no upper decomposition limit and can decompose spontaneously at high pressures and temperatures. The decomposition reaction does release large amounts of energy, which has to be removed from the reactor or other technical apparatus in such an event.

Modeling

Simulation is an important tool to gain a deeper understanding of the reactions taking place during polymerization and to correlate process conditions with polymer properties. Therefore, different simulation approaches are applied and combined.

Calorimetry

High-pressure calorimetry is a technique to measure the heat flux of pressurized substances. A special kind of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is the transitiometer, which enables a pressure range up to 4000 bar and a temperature range up to 300°C.
